   writer, political figure
   Born in Paris, Paul Déroulede served as a volunteer in the franco-prussian war (1870-71) and, after the French defeat, published his Chants du soldat (1872-75), a drama in verse, L'Hetmann, and a play, La Moabite, which was banned. Founder and president of the Ligue des patriotes (1882) and a supporter of General boulanger, he was elected deputy (1889). Forced to resign in 1892, he was reelected in 1898. Déroulede attempted, two days after the funeral of the president of the republic, félix faure, to raise the army against the parliamentary republic (February 1899) and was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in exile. He settled in Spain and then was pardoned in 1905. Déroulede's writings (Marches et Sonneries, 1881; Chants patriotiques; Livre de la Ligue des patriotes) express his strong nationalistic and revanchist patriotic views.
